Letter To The Philippines

This is one of the first tracks I ever recorded as a solo artist. I was a sophomore in college at this time, and I've been living in the Philippines for about a year.

Basically, I was starting to get really disillusioned with everything that I saw going on in the country. Me, my brother and my cousin got sticked up and robbed while hanging out at the car right outside my grandfather's house. They only got to take my little brother's cellphone and nobody was hurt, but it was the biggest crock of shit to me. Goddamn, my brother had a fucking knife to his neck for a fucking cellphone! Were things really THAT desperate for people here?!? It didn't make any sense at all to me.

I was working closely with Davadrian/D23 who was going by the name Brownstar at that time. I was figuring out my sound here, and I was starting to explore a different kind of flow that I never got to try with any of the tracks for the Audible album. He gave me this beat, and I started writing and this track came out.

This track was also featured on Turbulence Production's "B-Sides" as a bonus track. It was such a last minute addition that it wasn't even on the cover and track list but B-Roc thought it'd be perfect for the whole album. So without further ado, here's my "Letter To The Philippines."

lyrics

CHORUS
Finally, even I'm in heat, this is my only chance to get heard and to speak
Coz in my letter to the Philippines I hope you will see
We had enough of this shit (we had enough of this shit)

Dear Philippines, our pearl of the east,
Our dear motherland, former country of peace
Our nation that's devoured by money, greed
Our people that's easy corrupted by a piece of power
The hour is here, I'll just make it perfectly clear
Keep on going at how we're going and destruction is near
And in this letter I'ma tell you the issues we face
Instead of bitching and whining, let's find solutions to take
It isn't hard to get blind, and turn your eye to the side
Especially when you're not a victim of everyday crimes
People are cutting, killing people over cellular phones
So they can go to Greenhills and get some gadgets to own
Goddamn, what the fuck made these people like so?
The lack of money or they lazy? Either one or it's both
And since when did objects exceed the value of life?
Yo Philippines, it's time to wake up and face the light

CHORUS
Finally, even I'm in heat, this is my only chance to get heard and to speak
Coz in my letter to the Philippines I hope you will see
We had enough of this shit (we had enough of this shit)

Ignorance, poverty negligence,
Plus unemployment, injustice and cultural differences,
The weakest education, and status segregation
Drug addiction and terrorism, gotta save our nation

Why is it so difficult to find a suitable job?
There ain't security and everyday employees get robbed
They earn a salary but taxes take a bite off the top
Not for improvement in the country but for government slobs
To buy their cars and gas, maintain the pool and grass
Pay for a school that makes their kids act like snobs and asses
On the other hand, the underprivileged loses
They go to schools where the teachers are lazier than the students
The seventh grade didn't do shit but add a year to their torture
They should be learning material that they could use in the future
Learn to think for themselves, just look how stupid this is
They know the national product but not what GDP is
On top of that, they find it hard to speak and understand english
And got the balls to dis the people good at speaking the language?
How the fuck you expect us to elevate on our status
By putting down the people talking to foreigners for their business

CHORUS
Finally, even I'm in heat, this is my only chance to get heard and to speak
Coz in my letter to the Philippines I hope you will see
We had enough of this shit (we had enough of this shit)

If you got problems, then you solve em, real men don't run
Let's put our minds together -- the Philippines ain't gone
And if you care, I believe that we can unite as one
For the blue, red, white, three stars and a sun
And everybody take action, can't let the Philippines die
Imagine an army of people that's charging, yelling MABUHAY
I can only hope my letter opens a door
To realize we can change, signing off, sincerely yours, ONE

about

ONE3D, a hiphop artist from Quezon City, Philippines (but sometimes in Vancouver, BC), combines a gritty street flow and ... more multi-syllable rhyming schemes to create ORIGINAL hiphop music that talks about the things that most people are already thinking but don't voice out.

(Mad emphasis on ORIGINAL -- fuck carbon copy rappers, we got too many people copying someone else's sound) less
